Buying a New Mobile Phone

I have just been doing some price comparisons for costs in preparation for a presentation.  I never cease to be astounded at the differences in prices for the same product.

The Sony Xperia Z3 seems to be quite a desirable and popular mobile phone.

1) You can purchase an unlocked phone from Amazon for £404.00

2) You can buy the same phone, but locked from O2 for £469.00 or on a two year monthly contract for £33.00 per month (of which £20.00 is for the device and £13.00 is the calls package).  This means that you will pay £480 for the phone £312.00 for the call package. (APR 0%)

3) Or you can buy the same phone from Bright House (Locked to O2) for £12.63 per week for 104 weeks which is ....... £1,313.52!!!!! -

This is based on a cash price of £715.65 and includes the "5 Star Service" which costs £165.15, which makes the phone £550.00, if you were to buy it for cash.  You may be required to take out insurance which would add £2.22 per week (£230.00).  The phone is preloaded with £30 credit. Representative APR 99.9%.

Bright House is a pay weekly credit store, so would expect to their customers opt for the weekly payment scheme.

For me the lessons are, if you can afford to pay cash for an unlocked phone you will get the best deal and you can use whichever provider and package you wish.  If you need a contract with a phone, the O2 deal is not bad value.  Bright House is not good value at all and should be avoided.

Getting Ready for Christmas....... 2015!

We've only just had Christmas and as I write this today 6th January, people are packing their Christmas decorations away and children have just gone back to school.  Our wallets and purses are probably still suffering from the effects of the Christmas spend.

One way we can ease that heavy Christmas 'hit' is to put aside some money every month.  You could open a small savings account specifically for this purpose and most Credit Unions, including our own 6Towns credit union will have a special Christmas Account.  You save a regular amount, say £20 a month and then draw the money down only in November or December: you cannot ordinarily withdraw the money!

Many people have traditionally used Christmas Clubs and Voucher schemes to save for Christmas.  Unfortunately this money is not protected if the scheme fails, you may remember that there was the collapse of the big Farepak scheme a few years ago. However your money is protected by Financial Services Compensation Scheme if you save with a credit union, building society or bank.  When you do withdraw your money, you can spend it in any shop unlike store vouchers, which are limited.

You can join 6Towns Credit Union at:
